The years since publication of the last National Research Council (NRC) guidelines in 2001 have seen a remarkably increased interest in young calves. Publication of the NRC requirements model has led to better understanding of the variable nature of calf nutrient requirements. Several trials have measured growth of body components and body composition, which will lead to improved accuracy of prediction models. In addition, studies have led to increased understanding of protein digestibility and amino acid requirements for calves. A current area of research emphasis is to identify natural compounds that may improve gut health in the face of decreased antibiotic use in feeds.
